9 Jul 2009So I just bought a used Volvo XC90 with 50,000 miles and when I accelerate from a stop it has this really weird grinding sound in the engine right before it shifts into the next gear. It usually makes this sound right before shifting from 1st gear to second and makes the same sound when shifting from second to third. Any ideas why I hear this odd rubbing/grinding sound? (Automatic Trans.)

Actually, it could be from the chain drive ( kinda like the transfer case on a traditional 4wd truck), the transmission, the engine(though not likely), or it could be the axle splines grinding because they are not properly installed in the transmission or the c clip is broken. I would see a dealer only as this could be major and will take someone who is not familiar with Volvo’s twice as long (and twice as much) to find out.

This noise is coming from the transmission not the engine.
The XC90’s didn’t have good transmissions.
I would have the place you bought it from fix it or return the car.
Save yourself from spending an extra $5k for a transmission.
