My car is a 98 Honda Accord EX V6. The smell doesn’t happen all the time, but often enough that it’s an inconvenience. Any ideas? I’ve heard that you have to take the condenser apart and have it serviced, but I am all DIY after all, and money doesn’t grow on trees!

5 Responses to Dirty Smell Coming From A/c. Smells Like Dirt Clogged Somewhere?

The A/C cools air by sucking moisture out of the air. That’s why when your windows fog up, you have to turn on the A/C (you can leave the heater on). Your windows will clear up instantly.
This moisture has to go somewhere. However, some of it gets trapped, which then leads to bacterial growth. The best way to minimize this is to turn off the A/C a couple of miles from your destination, but leave the fan on. Have it suck air from the outside (vent). That way, you’ll give the car a chance to dry up the air.
I know some people who have tried to remove the smell creatively. They leave the car and a/c running, and they spray febreze or anti-bacterial spray into the incoming air vents.

hmm, are you often smoking while you drive?
if you do, just stop the habits.
if not, sorry bro.
bacteria often grow in our AC system it’s because everytime we use AC with our window opened or we smoke in the car.
for the first until the next month, we will not experience that, but after 3 months, you’ll feel it instantly.
but other opinion said, that it normal to happen like that if we live around beach or any other place with high humidity.
so, if that’s so, try to change the AC filter (also the anti bacteria catridge) regularly.
tks before.

It happened at my car before.
If you don’t clean your Ac very often, bacteria is going to grow in your AC. And plus the hot air outside and the AC inside, your AC will begin to smell. So, clean it.
