It has a clunk in the front left wheel when driving and when sitting naturally (not jacked up) i can pull on the top of the wheel and it has a loose feel to it and the lug nuts are tight. so i was wondering if it has the wheel bearing that would need to be changed or like a axle bearing needing changed. the difference being that i think you would have to pull the axle to change an axle bearing and the wheel bearing you would need only to pull the tire and rotor. Keep in mind it is a 4wd. thanks.

All cars and trucks have either wheel bearings or wheel hub bearings (assemblies).
The wobbling/looseness you feel when you jack your car up is called “play.” If your wheel has play (especially 12 to 6 o’clock) than that usually indicates a bad wheel bearing.
This truck has Wheel Hub Bearings. They are fairly easy to replace. The only really special tool you will need is a torque wrench.
Bearings for the front of your 1996 Dodge Ram 1500, 4 Wheel Drive can be purchased from http://mibearings.com/paypalparts/515006…
I hope that helps!

yes a 1996 dodge does have wheel bearing. It is a sealed unit and and u will have to remove the axle shaft nut and the brake caliper. it not hard to change. when u get it it will have new lug nut studs and come all together. but the main thing to keep in mind DO NOT try to move r run the truck with out the axle shaft back on the front will because if u do u will mess the bearings up and they will not warranty it.

If you pull on the top of the tire and it has play in it, it could be the wheel bearings, but it could also be the ball joints. You shouldn’t have to pull the axle to change either the bearings or the ball joints.

Sounds like a ball joint.
